Dramatis Personae: Golbbefold, the King Rat

 Golbbefold is one of the powers hidden between the shadows of New Caledonia. He's a clever schemer, a fierce warrior and a ruthless king. He reigns over the rat-people, the Fawr, in the Rat Kingdom below the streets of the city, warring against the Mogerai, or "morlocks", as the people above knows them.
He lost one of his arms when he took over the throne, but he never let that make it less savage in battle.

His hatred and despise for the surface dwellers is wide known between the ones who have any knowledge about him, but he had never done nothing like the Great Delving War two centuries ago. Some think that it's only a matter of time.

Golbbefold es uno de los poderes escondidos entre las sombras de Nueva Caledonia. Es un maquinador inteligente, un guerrero feroz y un rey despiadado. Gobierna sobre el pueblo rata, los Fawr, en el Reino de las Ratas bajo las calles de la ciudad, guerreando contra los Mogerai, o "morlocks", como la gente de arriba les conoce. Perdió uno de sus brazos cuando tomó el trono, pero nunca dejó que eso le hiciese ser menos salvaje en batalla.

Su odio y desprecio por los habitantes de la superficie es bien conocido entre aquellos que saben de su existencia, pero jamás ha hecho nada como la Gran Guerra de los Cavadores de hace dos siglos. Algunos piensan que es sólo cuestión de tiempo.

¿Steampunk?

Cuando empecé a pensar en el mundo de Jarmusch Obliterast sabía unas pocas cosas, y tenía my parte de desconocidas (y aún tengo). ¿Qué sabía?

-Tenía este personaje, un maestro de espías, un tipo duro, con un abrigo largo viejo y polvoriento.
-Quería hacerlo en una ambientación steampunk, mezclada con algunos elementos de las historias de fantasía y de horror.
-Quería contar su historia en capítulos o episodios de unas pocas páginas de cómic. habría una trama subyacente uniendo de forma vaga las diferentes entregas, pero cada capítulo tendría que ser capaz de leerse y entenderse por un lector nuevo casi sin explicación previa.
-Política, intriga, misterios, aventuras... Habría lugar para contar un amplio abanico de historias.
-Quería divertirme con ello.

Hoy me voy a centrar en la parte steampunk de la ecuación. ¿Qué significa steampunk? Mientras intentaba entenderlo, quería ir más allá de las ropas molonas con engranajes y gafas de aviador. Quería saber cuál era la esencia del steampunk, volviendo a sus orígenes.Como movimiento literario, debe mucho a las obras de escritores como Julio Verne y H. G. Wells. Ciencia ficción con un gusto victoriano. Eso estaba bien, pero necesitaba profundizar más, si quería que mi ambientación funcionase. La cosa era que una vez que habías dejado las historias y las ideas en los huesos, te encontrabas en un mundo donde los conceptos de la Mecánica Clásica aún se aplicaban, nada de física cuántica. Newton y Tesla sí, nada de Planck. Eso era algo con lo que podría trabajar.

De esta manera, decidí construir un mundo donde todos los aparatos estuviesen aún basados en el vapor, un tipo de era victoriana, pero no en la Tierra. Un mundo donde el hombre se había alzado como la especie dominante, y otras razas más ancianas, sabias y mágicas (elfos, enanos, orcos, ...) se hallaban en decadencia, o muertas hace mucho. Sabía que quería hacer de la magia algo extraño, poco común de afrontar, no desconocido, pero agonizante mientras la ciencia tomaba el control del mundo. Manteniendo las ideas básicas sencillas, jugando con ellas, esperaba crear un trasfondo donde el sentido de la maravilla, del peligro y la emoción pudiera tener lugar.

Es algo que conseguiré, tarde lo que tarde.

Steampunk?

When I started to think about the world of Jarmusch Obliterast I knew a few things, and I had my share of unknown ones (and still I do). What did I knew?

-I had this character, a spymaster, a though guy, with a long dusty old coat.
-I wanted to make it in a steampunk setting, mixed with some elements from horror and fantasy stories.
-I wanted to tell his story in chapters or episodes of few comic pages. There would be a underlying plot joining loosely the differents installments, but each chapter would have to be able to be read and understood by a new reader with almost no previous explanation.
-Politics, intrigue, mysteries, adventures... there would be place for a wide range of stories to be told.
-I wanted to have fun with it.

Today, I'm going to center in the steampunk part of the equation. What means steampunk? As I was trying to undertand it, I wanted to go beyond the fancy clothes with gears and pilot-goggles. I wanted to know which was the essence of the steampunk, going back to its origins. As a literary movement, it owes a lot to the works of writers like Jules Verne and H. G. Wells. Science Fiction with a Victorian taste. That was OK, but I needed to deepen more, if I wanted my setting to work. The thing was that once you had left the stories and ideas bare-boned, you found yourself in a world where the concepts of the Classical Mechanics were still applied, no quantum physics. Yes to Newton and Tesla, nothing about Planck. That was something with what I could work.

This way, I decided to build up a world where all devices where still steam-based, a kind of Victorian Age, but not on Earth. A world where man had risen up as the dominant species, and other elder, wiser and more magical races (elves, dwarves, orcs, ...) were in decline or dead long ago. I knew that I wanted magick to be something strange, uncommon to face, not unheard of, but dying as science took over the world. Keeping the basic ideas simple, playing with them, I hope to create a background where the sense of wonder, danger and excitement can take place.

It's somenthing what I'll accomplish, no matter how long it takes.

Rendez-vous avec Crobus

"-Ah, you are here again, Mr. Obliterast... May I offer you something, a cup of tea, perhaps?- said Elder Man Crobus, within the darkness, that reeked of wet ancient wood and rotten papers.
The spymaster grabbed his stick, harder this time.
-It would be easier for both of us if I wouldn't have to fight my way to meet you...
-Oh, do you really want to deprive and old man of one of the few amusements he has left? Nasty, nasty Mr. Obliterast...- Elder Man Crobus chuckled like a crow amidst the shadows.
-You know why I have come for.
Elder Man Crobus smiled.
-Yes, I know it. Come with me, maybe you could learn something about that Taxidermist you are searching."

Elder Man Crobus, a character you will meet in the future, in the stories of Jarmusch Obliterast. Who is he? What does he want? What kind of secrets does he keep in his sleeve?

-Sabe por qué he venido.
El Anciano Crobus sonrió.
-Sí, lo sé. Venga conmigo, tal vez pueda usted averiguar algo sobre ese Taxidermista que anda buscando."

New Caledonia: The City of many layers

New Caledonia, the city where Jarmusch Obliterast lives, fights and thrives, is one of many stark shades and bright lights. The New Caledonians live, love, laugh, learn, lose and die over a history forged in blood, steel, steam and secrecy. The Upper City and the Under City are both two completely different worlds.

The Under City, a great net of sewers, catacombs and caves, it's the reign of the rat men and the morlocks, two races decided to exterminate each other, always fighting a war that leads to no clear end yet. Between the Rat Kingdom and the Cannibal People, several dark individuals choose to make here their home, far from the reach of the authorities of the Upper City.

On the other hand, the Upper City, or the "proper New Caledonia", as the surface inhabitants like to call it, is where the most humans and other people live. It's a magnificent and sometimes dreadful city, with its districts, shops, houses, Royal Palace, ... One area is to be avoided by all the men of good will: The Neighbourhood of the Lost, where all the mortal filth, and some not-so-human, mind their own business.

But New Caledonia it's a city that tries to be modern, while tries to rest over the shoulders of its traditions, and to rise to a brighter future. Queen Zafra, still young, rules over the city and the country with an iron hand, hoping to mantain order to improve the wellbeing of her people. Interested in new technological advances, Her Majesty attemps to eradicate magic once and for all from the lives of her subjects.

But magic always find a twisted path to come back to reality, one way or the other.

This is New Caledonia. This is the city that never sleeps. This is a place of life, death,
and what comes in between.

Nueva Caledonia: La ciudad de muchas capas.

Nueva Caledonia, la ciudad donde Jarmusch Obliterast vive, lucha y medra, está llena de fuertes sombras y brillantes luces. Los neocaledonianos viven, aman, ríen, aprenden, pierden y mueren sobre una historia forjada en sangre, acero, vapor y secretos. La Ciudad Alta y la Ciudad Baja son dos mundos completamente distintos.

La Ciudad Baja, una vasta red de alcantarillas, catacumbas y cuevas, es el dominio de los hombres rata y los morlocks, dos razas decididas a exterminarse mutuamente, siempre combatiendo en una guerra que no conduce aún a ningún fin claro. Entre el Reino de las Ratas y el Pueblo Caníbal, varios individuos oscuros eligen fundar su hogar aquí, lejos del alcance las autoridades de la Ciudad Alta.

Por otra parte, la Ciudad Alta, o la "verdadera Nueva Caledonia", como les gusta llamarla a los habitantes de la superficie, es donde la mayoría de humanos y otros pueblos viven. Es una ciudad magnífica, y en ocasiones terrible, con sus barrios, tiendas, casas, Palacio Real, ... Una zona debe ser evitada por todos los hombres de buena voluntad: El Barrio de los Perdidos, donde toda la inmundicia mortal, y alguna no tan humana, se ocupan de sus propios asuntos.

Pero Nueva Caledonia es una ciudad que intenta ser moderna, mientras intenta apoyarse en los hombros de sus tradiciones, y ascender hacia un futuro más brillante. La Reina Zafra, aún joven, gobierna sobre la ciudad y el país con mano de hierro, con la esperanza de mantener el orden para mejorar el bienestar de su gente. Interesada en los nuevos avances tecnológicos, Su Majestad trata de erradicar la magia de una vez por todas de las vidas de sus súbditos.

Pero la magia siempre encuentra una camino retorcido para volver a la realidad, de una u otra forma.

Ésta es Nueva Caledonia. Ésta es la ciudad que nunca duerme. Éste es un lugar de vida, muerte, y lo que ocurre entre medias.

 Jarmusch Obliterast, the main character of our story, is a man with a tough tale to tell. Orphan, survivor, ex-convict, and, before all, an agent of the Queen.

Trained in several combat systems, both with and without weapons, and occult lore, as well as more mundane knowledge, he's a kind of deductive and intuitive beast...

Also a resourceful man, but sometimes unfortunate, stubborn, somehow pessimistic, and with a little excess of pride.

Jarmusch Obliterast, el protagonista de nuestra historia, es un hombre con un relato duro que contar. Huérfano, superviviente, ex-convicto, y, ante todo, un agente de la Reina.

Entrenado en varios sistemas de combate, con y sin armas, y versado en saber oculto, así como en conocimiento más mundano, es un tipo de bestia deductiva e intuitiva...

También hombre de recursos, pero en ocasiones desafortunado, cabezota, algo pesimista, y con un pequeño exceso de orgullo.

The beginning

Hello, welcome to New Caledonia.

This is the story of a city, shrouded in mist, behind whose walls and below whose streets a lot of truths are hiding, and there's a plethora of masks concealing reality, cold, dark and frightening.

Amongst steam and shade ghosts, amidst the menace of arcane forces and an incipient technology, Jarmusch Obliterast's world develops, a man who lives on the razor's edge, fighting against threats which remain uknown for the ordinary citizen, a man who rises glancing to the darkness' eyes and staring back at its gaze.

An assassin, a warrior, a thief, a leader, a hero, a villain... each of these, and much more, is Jarmusch, agent of Her Majesty's Secret Service.

We hope that you find the journey exciting.

Hola, bienvenidos a Nueva Caledonia.

Ésta es la historia de una ciudad, sumida en las brumas, tras cuyos muros y bajo cuyas calles se esconden muchas verdades, y hay multitud de máscaras ocultando la realidad, fría, oscura y temible.

En medio de fantasmas de vapor y sombra, entre la amenaza de fuerzas arcanas y una tecnología incipiente, se desarrolla el mundo de Jarmusch Obliterast, un hombre que vive en el filo de la navaja, combatiendo peligros que permanecen desconocidos para el ciudadano de a pie, un hombre que se alza mirando a los ojos a la oscuridad y devolviéndole la mirada.

Un asesino, un guerrero, un ladrón, un líder, un héroe, un villano... todo eso y mucho más es Jarmusch, agente del Servicio Secreto de su Majestad.
